You are invited to spend the day outdoors with us counting birds as part of the oldest continous citizen science project in the country! This year marks 117 years!

THE 117th Christmas Bird Count is HERE!

Calling all Birders! It’s time for the CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNT!! As always, Tahoma Audubon holds our CBC on the 3rd Saturday in December, so this year it will be on December 17.

As you may know, the first Christmas Bird Count was held on Christmas Day in1900 - with 27 observers  in 25 locations - as an alternative to the Side Hunt that was traditional at that time.Their new idea was to count, rather than shoot, the birds seen and it has truly caught on. Join us as we count all of our birds heard or seen in our Count Circle. It’s a fine tradition that is both enjoyable as well as useful. The accumulated data is used for various scientific projects and studies. This continues to be the  largest and longest-running Citizen Science program in the world. Join us and continue to make history!

National Audubon has changed to an all on-line format in order to avoid the need for publishing costs of the CBC Report, while also allowing more people to participate without the possible constraint of a fee. Donations to Audubon are of course accepted to assist with costs.

After a day in the field, we meet – Indoors! – to share dinner, stories of the day, and total up the species at our Tally Dinner, at Snake Lake Nature Center starting at 4:30. The meal is provided at a cost of $6.00 per birder.

You can sign up directly with one of our 8 Area Coordinators (listed below) or if you are unsure of where you want to count, you can e-mail or call me directly – Faye McAdams Hands, Tahoma Audubon Count Coordinator or home:(360) 275-0553, cell: (253) 278-3712.
